</begin pointless rant>
I was browsing around iTunes the other day, looking for more Utada Hikaru stuff to download. I personally prefer her English songs over her J-pop ones, so I was looking at one of her English albums. Out of curiosity, I started to read the album reviews, starting with all the one-star ones.

Here’s what I noticed in every low review:

“She shouldn’t do English stuff, her J-pop is so creative and different and now she’s just trying to meld with our crappy music and it doesn’t sound good at all.”

“I don’t like the stuff she sings about, I like her Japanese songs better they’re a lot deeper.”

“The only English songs by her that I like are the Kingdom Hearts ones cause I’m like the #1 Kingdom Hearts fan evur!! All her other English songs suck but her J-pop ones are so cool and original!!”

“Go back to Japan, don’t sing in English!”

…okay, I can’t be the only one who can see the total weeaboo-ness in all this. Honestly. I don’t know why this IRKS me so much, but it does. I really don’t like seeing people that are like “I only listen to J-pop and English pop sucks” or “I only watch Japanese cartoons, if it’s made in America it’s boring and it sucks.” Seriously. I know everyone has their own personal preference and taste in music and shows, and I think it’s pretty darn obvious that I like Japanese comic books and some Japanese singers. What I’m tired of is the animu fan mindset that “Japan=God, America=LAME and STOOPID and for people that will NEVAR BE ORIGINAL LIKE US GAIZ”.

“Utada’s J-pop is so original and cool!” No, it’s not. Listen to lots and lots of J-pop and her stuff sounds exactly like everyone else’s. The only difference is that her voice doesn’t sound like a chipmunk on helium.

“Her English songs are so shallow, not like her deep J-pop songs.” Do something for me: Learn more Japanese than just “kawaii” or “neko”, or at least look up the translations to her songs. Surprise!! Her Japanese songs sing about the exact same things as her English songs. Half the people that leave those kinds of comments don’t know any Japanese whatsoever, and have no idea what they’re listening to when she pops up on their iPod.

“Her only good English songs are the ones for Kingdom Hearts!” Of course those are acceptable; they’re slapped onto a Japanese game. We can forgive the fact that they’re in the Language of Evil.

It’s more annoying than the Twilight fandom.
